“North to the Future”

In1963, the Alaska Purchase Centennial Commission announced a competition to select a noteworthy state motto. Created by veteran newsman Richard Peter from Juneau, “North to the Future” was adopted in1967 — exactly 100 years after the US purchased Alaska from Russia. The motto is meant to represent Alaska as a land of promise. Peter wanted it to remind everyone yearning to be free that beyond the horizon of urban clutter, there is a Great Land providing a new tomorrow.
