Dog Mushing

When the 1000 mile Iditarod Race from Anchorage to Nome first started in 1973, Alaska had already chosen dog mushing as its official sport in 1972. Before airplanes and snowmobiles, mushing had been a principal means of transportation in many areas of Alaska and continues to be important in some rural villages. Historically significant mushing events include the 1908 All-Alaska Sweepstakes Race and the 1925 “Great Race of Mercy to Nome.” The Dog Mushers Hall of Fame opened in 1966. At least a dozen sled dog races take place in Alaska each winter.
